Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept new patients?

We are always accepting new patients at Smile On Dentistry. Please request an appointment online or contact our office directly to schedule an appointment.

Do you accept my insurance?

We are in network with most PPO insurance plans. For information about your specific plan, schedule an appointment online or call our office, and we will verify your insurance benefits.

Why do I need dental x-rays?

A comprehensive dental examination involves both a clinical exam (looking at your teeth) as well as a radiographic exam (looking at x-rays). Without x-rays, we can only see on the surface, and there may be issues that are brewing beneath the surface. X-ray images provide the information we need to plan your dental treatment accurately. Without x-rays, we are not able to diagnose any issues that you may be having and our ultimate goal is to educate and provide you with a comprehensive plan to prevent issues from progressing or forming.

What services does a general dentist offer?

At Smile On Dentistry, we offer a variety of preventive, cosmetic, surgical, and restorative dental solutions to best care for the needs of you and your family.

What does a visit as a new patient look like?

As a new patient, we look forward to meeting you, getting to know you, and coming up with a comprehensive treatment plan specific to your dental needs. Our new patient exams are typically scheduled for 1.5 hours to allow for the proper diagnostic tools (x-rays, pictures, and scans if needed) and to allow time to meet with Dr. On to discuss your dental needs and treatment options without rushing.

Do you offer teeth whitening?

If you are looking for a cosmetic dentist in McKinney for teeth whitening, Smile On Dentistry can recommend and offers several teeth whitening options based on your individual needs. This may involve in office whitening or take home options for your convenience. If you are interested in teeth whitening services in McKinney, Texas, please call our office to set up an appointment to discuss our options.

Will my insurance pay for my whole visit?

Your insurance policy is a contract between you and your insurance company. As such, each insurance plan has specific benefits package with specific coverage amounts based off of percentages. Most dental insurances provide you with a yearly maximum between $1,000-$2,500, with the average being $1,500. Most insurances will cover preventative services like exams, x-rays, and basic cleanings at no cost to the patient but will require patients to pay a copay on other services. Our priority is treating you based on what is needed and not what your insurance covers, but we will always do our best to help maximize your benefits.

What if I do not have dental insurance?

Due to the high cost of insurance and the nature of insurance itself, we understand that many patients do not have dental coverage. Because our mission is to provide high quality dental care at affordable prices, we have developed our own in-house membership plan to help uninsured patients offset the cost of dental care. Additionally, we are happy to work with our patients through different financing options to ensure that our patients have access to dental care.

Will I be referred to other offices?

Our office provides comprehensive treatment for patients of all ages. During your exam, we will review your individualized treatment plan and discuss our findings and options. While we try to provide you with as much treatment as possible within the comfort of our office, we may refer you to a specialist depending on the scope of the treatment. Ultimately, it is our goal to provide you with the most optimal treatment possible and sometimes, this means we need to refer you to another office if it is in your best interest.

What is your cancellation policy?

When you schedule an appointment with us, we reserve that time specifically for you. We understand that unforeseen circumstances do occur that may require you to change or cancel your appointment. We request a 24 hour notice if you do need to change your scheduled appointment so that we may offer that time to another patient who may be in need of an appointment.

How do I prevent cavities?

We follow the American Dental Association guidelines to help patients prevent tooth decay. These include brushing at least twice a day, flossing every day, avoiding sugar, and maintaining twice-yearly professional cleanings.

How often should I floss my teeth?

It is recommended that people floss at least once a day to ensure that food does not build up between teeth and form harmful plaque.

What do I need to bring to my first dental appointment?

Typically, you will be asked to bring a photo ID and a copy of your insurance details (if any) to your first appointment. You can always complete your new patient forms electronically to save time during your initial visit.

How often should I visit the dentist?

The American Dental Association recommends that most people visit the dentist every 6 months. However, specific needs may require more frequent visits. Contact Smile On Dentistry of McKinney for more information or to schedule an appointment.
